“HBYFD” - a song about power

Fwiw, I have driven a Tesla, and they are pretty badass.

Story Pairing

This song started as a magnificent seed planted in the mind of my good friend Brad. He and his wife came out to one of my out of town shows in Pigeon Forge (shout out to Daisy and Brad, one of my favorite couples to hang with ever and basically family at this point).

Anyway, as a songwriter, it’s almost comical how often people give you “ideas” for a song. Personally I love them, because while there is some major sifting that takes place, every once and while a gem rolls across the desk.

The line Brad game me was “Hey Buddy Your Fly’s Down”. The rest was history. Thank you Brad!

A story within a story:

I immediately thought about how telling someone their fly is down is kinda of a weird power move. You can stop just about anyone in their tracks with it. So I am giving you a phrase of power, that if used correctly, can alter your future.

Have you ever had a bad boss? Or known someone well off, but not the hard working lovable self made individual, more of the money hungry thresher of men. Thresher in the sense of cutting anyone and everyone down around them to make themselves feel bigger. That’s where this phrase shines.

I had a professional relationship with an individual who fell neatly into the latter category. We were at an event, and their fly was down. I struggled with even mentioning it… but that was too vindictive for my blood. I told them. When I did, the rest of that afternoon their embarrassment was like a shield. I was no longer the butt of a barbed tongue, or reminded of how I could be better… I was free. All from an unclosed zipper and a dash of awareness.

So take that how you will. You hold in your hands a sword as sharp as any other. Wield it with wisdom or malice. Let me know how it goes.

Lyrics

You got a parking space for your Tesla

Names’ on the license plate, you’re the best of us

Always got something to say

Letting us know that you paid

This old thing? It’s just custom made

Saying it’s about time

A real job’s easy to find

Is there anything up in that mind

and I say

Hey buddy your flys down

It’s the great equalizer

Cut you down to size sir

A king in his clothes hates being exposed

It’s the great equalizer

Cut you down to size sir

A king in his clothes hates being exposed

If he’s getting in too close, you say

Hey buddy your flys down

You ain’t no better

You ain’t no better

You ain’t no better than us

You ain’t no better

Look at that little fella

You ain’t no better than us

It’s the great equalizer

Cut you down to size sir

A king in his clothes hates being exposed

It’s the great equalizer

Cut you down to size sir

A king in his clothes hates being exposed

If he’s getting in too close, you say

Hey buddy your flys down
