“Don’t I Know” - a song about a blind eye

How simple life would be if ignorance was a constant companion.

Story Pairing

I hate flies. Point me to someone that says they like them… I’m probably not going to go out of my way to spend much time with that person. They can have all the flies to themselves, I don’t even want one.

I recently did a few shows in Missouri and Kansas at the beginning of the month and had three days off until the next one. I figured I would head down to southern Missouri and maybe do some fishing. Do I fish? No, not really. We did in a pond growing up, but I couldn’t tell you what you have to do to catch a fish (besides cross your fingers). Anyway, I had the big idea that I would start the fishing chapter of my life. The biggest Bass Pro shop is in Springfield, MO, so I thought I’d set aside my ignorance and take steps towards landing the biggest fish anyone has ever seen in the world.

I didn’t end up fishing.

The travel poles looked like pieces of shit (don’t tell Bass Pro I’m bad mouthing them), and I think I’d rather learn to fly fish. I seem to have a lot of friends that fly fish and a few have offered to show me the ropes, so I will hold off, learn how to do that, and make give fishing another shot when I head to the Pacific Northwest in May.

Instead of fishing, I decided to take pictures and play some guitar. This song I wrote as I was sitting next to the Missouri River, soaking up some sun on a chilly day, and swatting flies away from my arms and face. If I had one wish I would wish that the world no longer had anyone named Ben Gage without a billion dollars… if I had a second wish, no more flies.

Video Notes:
I finally got a new camera! This is the first video that I’ve made with it, and looking forward to making more that look so clear like this, 4k baby! I was using a bunch of stuff that I had for when I was streaming all the time, but most of that capped at 1080 because you really couldn’t stream in 4K.

For now, the videos are going to be one angle, because trading in all that old gear only covered half of the cost of the new camera. I probably shouldn’t have sat on it as long as I did.

Anyway, enjoy, and thank you to the folks on Patreon! I use all of what I make there to put right back into this website and these musings. It doesn’t cover all the costs by a long shot, but helps to take the edge off and keep me inspired to make more.

Lyrics

You left me in the cold so I could learn my lesson

Left me in the cold so I could die

Found me in the morning I was second guessing

Could be the end of me is by your side

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Cover me in Kisses when you hear I’m leaving

Cover me in kisses when I go

Quite the show to let me know and think you’re grieving

But smile in the mirror when i hit the road

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Solo

Whispers in the wind, they say your hurting

Whispers in the wind, they say you’re fine

Depends on who you’re playing when they raise the curtain

It’s only a character that’s mine

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Sugar sure is sweeter when you’re sharing honey

Sugar sure is sweeter when it’s free

I’ve been short on sugar and I’m bleeding money

That sugars being shared with more than me

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Solo

Easy now to notice from miles away

Easy now to notice from above

Ups and downs and rounds and rounds will keep you busy

Getting busy ain't the same as having love

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know

Don’t I Know
