“Know It All” - a song about storge

storge - (pronounced stor-jay): An ancient Greek word for natural, affectionate, and protective love that grows quietly through familiarity, safety, and friendship

Story Pairing

Life is about experience they say. I tend to agree, but in particular experiencing something for the first time is a special sort of sweet.

I grew up in a big family, I’ve mentioned them before and will continue. Oldest of 7. With all those people, our laundry room was always packed with dirty clothes. The mountain could have been lessoned if our mom would let us wear things more than a day, but alas, she insisted we not stink like feral beasts. The pile would get big enough, that burrowing into it was often one of the go to hiding spots in a game of hide and seek. (If my mom is reading this and starts to think, hey I was washing as fast as the washer and our well would allow… I know mom, it’s a story, you’re amazing, I love you).

Anyway, fast forward to now. I’m in the best relationship I have ever had and am beyond lucky. Laundry plays little to no role in that, however there is a moment that I got to experience for the first time and it made it into this song in a way. Ashley is dirty laundry’s worst nightmare, it stands no chance. My previous system was an array of piles.

1. Clean
2. Second Chance Ready
3. Emergency Only
4. Very Dirty

So our house began implementing a different system.

Where the new experience comes into all of this, is that there was a day that I hopped into the shower, and my clothes (probably dirty from hiking or sawdust) got whisked away and put into a load of laundry. When I stepped out of the shower, there wasn’t an article of dirty clothing in the house. Not one. I was naked and could literally put on anything that I wanted (aside from the ones in the washer, but come on, that’s basically considered clean already). It was a moment I had never known. Completely open season on my entire wardrobe… I’ll never forget the rush, never.

Now to try and redeem myself a bit, and speak on something sweeter than house chores.

To feel cared for and loved is gift. It’s all the small ways that you see a person noticing you and thinking of you that makes you fall deeper and deeper in love. To walk into a shared space of any kind and immediately feel at ease and connected, name a more lovely song. I’m writing this from Texas on a run of shows that Ashley couldn’t join me. As I was packing up the van this morning, I saw the shelf she packed before I left with my favorite tea, and I can’t wait until the next morning we can share a cup together. I shook out the rug, because I know she likes the keep it tidy and it reminds me of her. I hung both my coats up on the same hook, so that the second sits empty for when we are adventuring together again. It’s the various spaces in my day that she occupies regardless of proximity, the little moments I never would have known before and I’m so glad to now know.

(I’m hoping I earned myself a big smooch with all this rambling)

Lyrics

I know shes upstairs, making the house feel a little warmer

She woke up early, to put our laundry on the line

I walk behind her, undoing what shes done and never notice

She wonders how mens eyes work, says you damn fool, I love you anyway

I know you do, know you do

Now I know things I never would’ve known when I didn’t know you

I know you do, pray you do too

That you know I know, you know when I know you do

I come home broken, she holds me together till I’m mended

She distracts me, when my overthinking mind would drag me down

I try to outthink her, to beat her to the problems that need solving

She says “hey nice try” I want you smiling, whenever I’m around

I know you do, know you do

Now I know things I never would’ve known when I didn’t know you

I know you do, pray you do too

That you know I know, you know when I know you do

I can say with utmost confidence,

You raise my world up a class or two

I know you do, know you do

Now I know things I never would’ve known when I didn’t know you

I know you do, pray you do too

That you know I know, you know when I know you do
