“Georgia” - a song about running away

Made a VR video, if you have a headset… it’s kinda cool. Recorded at Mead’s Quarry just outside of Knoxville, TN.

Story Pairing

So technically this song is about Canton, OH, however (and no offense to Cantonians) the word Georgia is a little prettier to sing in my opinion, and it exists as a replacement for a reason.

Picture this if you will, you are sitting at the bar waiting for a drink. You are parched, maybe the thirstiest you’ve ever been. People around you have cold drinks, friends, money, everything you could ever want, and you can barley pull your sandy tongue off the roof of your paper mouth to speak.

Anyway, while you are in limbo a drunk man comes up to you and begins.

“I’m not even…even supposed to be here.” Hiccup, burp, drink, slosh, burp.

“I had a girlfriend who was the love of my life, THE LOVE OF MY LIFE,” he breaths.

“But she broke my heart. Ripped it out. She cheated on me. CHEATED.” (that is some breath my friend).

“Everyone thought that I’d go to Georgia. Move back in with my parents. Go die” swig, grunt “But not me, I decided to move, go where no one knows me”

A know from me, and I gather air to interject… alas

“So I came here, to Canton, OH. Now I can do whatever I want. No pressure and no one to tell me that I am a loser” (was that a fart?) “I don’t even think I ever even like her anyway”

I smile and raise my hand partially… “I just wanted a drink man, the last name is Gage”

“Ah ok ok. Yea I should get back to work”

My bartender folks.

Later in the night when I was leaving I saw/heard him sharing the same story with another patron. I have feeling it was a story that got shared often.

Anyway, I stole his story, the scraps he gave me, changed a few things… and here we are now.

Song Structure

This isn’t overly complex, but I constantly forget which cord to go to between the C and the F. I don’t play this song very much, and it’s one that always seems to hide as soon as it gets a chance.

Verse: F/Dm/Am/Bb/C/F/C/F

Chorus: Dm/Am/Bb/C/F/C/Dm/Bb/C/F

Bridge: Am/Bb/F/Am/Bb/C

Lyrics

I'm heading back to Georgia with my tail between my legs

Pockets they are empty as my mind

I couldn't find a thought and a thought couldn't find me

Crying in the dark, wishing I could sleep

I'm heading back, my head hung in defeat

Comfort me, sweet jesus, someone hold me in their arms

I'm on the side of the road, kicking stones at passing cars

I do not have a cup, and I surely have no bread

I ain't asking for forgiveness, I'm heading to Georgia instead

Thank yous are in order to everyone I met,

Ever gave a moment of their time

But anger takes me over, and I haven't simmered yet

Whispered even one word to let you know how much that met

I'm heading back and I'm carrying that debt

Comfort me, sweet jesus, someone hold me in their arms

I'm on the side of the road, kicking stones at passing cars

I do not have a cup, and I surely have no bread

I ain't asking for forgiveness, I'm heading to Georgia instead

Add me to your prayer list, send me up to heaven high

I gave up on trying, cause it failed me every time

I feel others passing me and I flash a bitter smile

Do not care if they win or lose

Or fall down on the ground, I'll look to other way

Makes me sick that I, find comfort in their pain

I'm heading back, my hands are clearly stained

Comfort me, sweet jesus, someone hold me in their arms

I'm on the side of the road, kicking stones at passing cars

I do not have a cup, and I surely have no bread

I ain't asking for forgiveness

I ain't asking for forgiveness

I ain't asking for forgiveness, I'm heading to Georgia instead
