“Florida Sand” - a song about sides

Two sides to every coin. Two sides to every story. Two sides at most Cracker Barrels (I believe)… (the dumplings are the superior choice).

Story Pairing

Not every song needs the story shared, some of them are private or even potentially hurtful. I’m not a perfect person and I’ve done things that I regret, and been part of situations I regret. Would I change them? Looking back in a vacuum that answer is normally yes, but zoom out and look around at where I am at now and the person I am because of my particular collection of “situations” changes that answer. I am trying to always grow and one of those avenues of growth means coming to terms with the pieces of me that I may not like as much as the others. If I can apply that sort of healthy forgiveness to myself then it’s easier to give it to others as well.

Anyway, that’s a long way of saying some things are shitty, oh well, can’t do anything about it now.

So let’s talk gear! In this video I took a crack at the fad that is “rubber-bridging”. In this case I ran a rubber tube under the strings by the bridge of my Martin 00015sm. The pickup is a magnetic sound hole Seymour Duncan, and I ran it through a Fishman Loudbox with the verb cranked. If you turn up your speaker on whatever you are listening, you can hear the electric noise that I haven’t figured out how to get rid of just yet…. but Tuck Mindrum is going to help me out with that. Just means more experimenting.

It’s basically just a mega palm mute and then some. I really dig how it sounds in person, and with some practice I will get the recorded sound to match that “coolness”. If you want to hear it or play the guitar, just swing on by the house. Bring snacks.

Speaking of snacks, I am serious that the dumplings are the best sides at Cracker Barrel. As a kid I would order double dumplings for my two sides. My love of fat and bread and gravy are strong contributors to the soft approachable fluffy folk singer you see before you today.

Song Structure

This song was born of me practicing double stops years ago. I use a mix of the following shapes, not really sure what all the chords are confidently enough to share anything besides the fret locations.

Key: E

Shape 1: 0-2-0-1-0-0

Shape 2: 0-4-0-2-x-x

Shape 3: 0-6-0-4-x-x

Shape 4: 0-9-0-7-x-x

Shape 5: 0-7-0-6-x-x

Shape 6: 0-11-0-9-x-x

Lyrics

Nothing breaks like a heart, practiced enough to know

No ones gonna come round to save your soul

We shared a bed, just a place to rest your head

No one really cares for that anymore

I don't believe I'll ever believe

I don't believe I'll ever believe

You headed south, for sunshine and Florida sand

Pass my story out with a second hand

I said my piece, buried in OH clay

Down beside the bones you tucked away

I don't believe I'll ever believe

I don't believe I'll ever believe

Drink your water from a puddle by the road

Cracking lips, they ain't preaching anymore

See you sliding as you're running towards the door

And I don't believe in us anymore

I don't believe in us

I don't believe I'll ever believe

I don't believe I'll ever believe

I don't believe I'll ever believe

I don't believe I'll ever believe
